The Library Database
In our English 111 class we had two days to explore the library’s database to find a list of controversial problems. This was very useful because I didn’t know about any of these web sites. Learning these new resources made me find a more interesting topic that the one I had already chosen. I now have a broader topic to discuss instead of the plain old legalization of Marijuana. The most useful resource was believe it or not my school library’s web. I couldn’t believe that this one website would open doors to many more websites. For many people are doing their paper on medical issues, my school library website also has a section for journals or articles. The CQ Researcher is the resource that changed my research paper. That website was very easy and it also allowed you to narrow your search especially if you were talking about a very wide topic. With WorldCat you had to know exactly all of the information about the book you needed. CINAHL was a good website because it allowed you to search a topic with more than one key work ex) Children and Race and Adoption. Now if you were to just say children, race and adoption all of those words might not have been in the topic you really wanted to talk about. Also CINAHL allowed you to filter out the Publication Date. This was a great thing because you don’t want to talk about a controversial topic that happened in 1978, you want to talk about a more recent topic. I am glad I was able to take some time out to learn what my college has to offer. This will help out with more papers to come.

A Giant Step by Henry Louis Gates Jr.
A Giant Step was very intriguing. This memoir will make you thankful for such wonderful technology and brilliant scientists that we have now compared to 1975. It’s a shame that the doctor was so racist that he didn’t want to help. I respect his mom for not letting this doctor discourage her in seeking out the proper medical attention that her son needed. I guess Mr. Gates knew too much to be an African American. I couldn’t believe he had to endure the pain in his knees and hips for so long, so I can see why he had a love hate relationship with those orthopedic shoes. I think I wouldn’t have thrown them away since the orthotics has been with him for so long. I would have had them bronzed and sitting on the mantel as a reminder that life gets better. Those shoes wore him down yet helped him throughout the 26 years. I guess they had their benefits to them. I know he was able to park in the handicapped zone and hopefully got a disability check. I can see how the shoes were not such a benefit because he was young and interested in sports. Once Mr. Gates was finally able to have the surgery he was a nervous wreck. The feeling was like the night before the first day of school. I know he felt great about buying those shoes that he has always dreamed about. I can bet you he purchased at least three pair.
This memoir also talks about how different one person is from the other. For example the bully who was finally nice to him, his mom for staying strong and determined and the doctor who was racist. This world is filled with many different people that make the world go round.

Good day. This is my first English class since 1998-1999 high school year. So I
guess you can say I am a little excited and not so excited about this class. I'm
excited about this class becuase I know I will be learning new material. I'm not so
excited because I don't like writing papers especially papers with 9 or more pages.
I dont have much experience with writing especially in complete sentences, using
punctuations and any of the other proper english writing skills. From what I can
remember I have always wrote in class. Blogging probably was not even invented then.
Pen and paper was our very best friend. With me being a new blogger this will allow
the public to help me with my writing. Who knows somebody out there might even give
me some pointers that will stick with me.
My career goal is becoming a RN (Registered Nurse). With that in mind, I'm really
not sure how this english class will prepare me for that. From what I have
experienced with nurses they just need to make sure someone can read their
handwriting. Now doctors on the other hand is another thing. In my opinion I am a
good public speaker. I would say that I need to increase my vocabulary. At times I
have a habit of using words in repetation. Which I think might not be proper english
writing.
From English 111, I hope to learn the proper way of writing and hope to enjoy this
class. English is not one of my favorite subjects. Especially when most of the
population don't use proper english anyway. Everyone has gotten so used to using
abrevations and the computer to correct their grammar. I also would like this class
to increase my vocabulary. I think this class would definately help me with blogging
and computer writing. I also think this class will help me with seeing writing from
someone elses point of view. Who knows maybe one day I will become a famous aurthur.
I hope this will be enough writing. After a couple of hundred would I tend to have
nothing much to talk about.
